For Nautical Phantoms, 1991 was their last year of service. The last two regular squadrons, VMFA-112 and VMFA-321 both retired their faithful F-4S Phantom IIs and transitioned into the much less cool F-18A Hornet. Though still flying, with the Navy as QF-4s, the Phantom has been silent at most Naval Air Stations for nearly a decade. Not to be a unit to let their faithful warhorses be put to pasture, VMFA-321 did a sterling job painting up the commander's aircraft for the farewell ceremony. That plane is on this decal sheet as is now proudly performing a last duty as gate guard at NAF Andrews.

Repliscale was a decal company that was solvent for less than a decade itself. They produced a number of interesting decal sheets, but did themselves in, I think, by not offering sheets that filled the envelope in which they came. Often a sheet would be less than 1/5 the size of a 'normal' one and so there was no perceived value, no matter how well done the decals.

This sheet has aircraft for those last two USMC Phantom squadrons, and offers a number of options on this 1992 sheet.

For VMFA-321, you can do four planes from their last deployment to Key West. All of them are in the Tactical Paint Scheme and three of them have nose art. Several of this units planes had a rather bluish upper surface grey that is a bit different from the norm. I encourage you to visit the Photo Archives in the Features section to see some images of this units planes as an example.

The specially painted 'farewell' scheme is also included on this sheet. The painting guide for all these planes is quite well done and gives you all the info you need. As you can see. you can really only do two planes with what is on the sheet, thanks to the lack of space for national insignia. However markings are not that tough to come by on aftermarket sheets.

The other unit is VMFA-112. You can do three planes from this unit; one in gloss light gull grey over white and two in the TPS scheme.

If you are a Phantom Phan and build in 1/72, this sheet is one that you should try to find as it allows the last of the nautical F-4s to be built.
