Impact Decals has released their sixth decal set and though it has been over a year since the last one, the results are well worth the wait. If you have not had a chance to treat yourself to a set of Impact decals, you really should do so. Not only are they superbly printed, with markings crisply done and in full register, but the subject provided is always a great one with multiple aircraft types being done.

This one is no exception, covering the aircraft of VMFA-531 Grey Ghosts from 1958 to 1972. All of the aircraft are in light gull grey and white, my favorite camouflage scheme and offer seven different schemes, most of them Phantoms. There are kits for all these options with the Skyknight being done by Czech Model (good luck in finding one), the Skyray by Tamiya, and the Phantoms by Hasegawa. It is recommended for the early versions to buy the F-4J kit due to its engraved panel lines, and get a Royal Resins conversion set. That company can also be used for the unslotted stabs.

OK, so first up is the F3D Skyknight from MCAS Cherry Point in 1958. The trim on this aircraft is in red.

Next a somewhat plain F4D Skyray from 1962. Interestingly, many USMC Skyray units were devoid of fancy markings, as is this one.

Their first Phantom II was in 1966 with the F-4B. Still rather plain, but it does have an interesting flash. This aircraft will require the unslotted stabilizer.

Next with the first all blue tail is another F-4B. This time, it is from 1969, after the unit moved to El Toro. Note the additional antenna bulge on the front of the fin.

A well-zapped F-4B is from 1973 when aboard the USS Forrestal and after an operational period aboard the HMS Ark Royal. The builder will need to paint the fin and rudder in Gunship Grey prior to installing the markings.

Next with the blue tail gone, is an F-4N from 1975 back at home at El Toro. This aircraft has the smaller wing insignia and a yellow fin tip.

Finally, the last of their Phantoms from 1978 and back to the blue fin with their final F-4N. This one is in overall light gull grey with the fin in a slightly lighter shade of blue than the previous blue fin. Instructions indicate the proper shade. The unit soon transitioned to the F-18A Hornet.

There are enough markings on the sheet to do the Skyknight, the Skyray and two Phantoms. Those wishing to do more will hae to rely on kit decals to help with the common markings.

An excellent sheet which I know you will find to your liking.
