Back during the Cold War (never thought I'd say that in the past tense), one of the things that kept money flowing to the USAF was the threat of Soviet bombers flying into the US to drop nuclear bombs on cities and installations. To this effect, a great deal of the treasury was spent developing airplanes to meet that threat. One was the McDonnell F-101B Voodo, a type also used by Canada. After its relatively short stint in the regular USAF, the aircraft was turned over to the ANG, who put a lot of flight hours on these airframes before they were eventually retired in the early 1980s. Ironically, all the units on this sheet had flown the F-102 before turning them in for the Voodoo. They all moved on to F-4C/D Phantoms once the F-101 years were over.
There are markings for five aircraft from three units on this sheet. All the aircraft are in overall ADC Grey (now called Aircraft Grey by paint makers). First up is the 111 FIS, Texas ANG and there are three schemes from this unit. First is their early scheme which is similar to what they had with F-102s from 1976. Next are two of the later options with the Texas flag on the fin. One is from 1980 at that year's William Tell completion. The other is from 1982 at that year's competition.
Next is a nice one from the 179 FIS, Minnesota ANG in 1974 with the final option being with the 178 FIS North Dakota ANG in 1974.
The sheet is superbly done and provides stencils and insignia/USAF markings (not shown) for one aircraft. Like all Caracal sheets, it is printed by Cartograf so you know you are getting the best. Instructions are in full color and include information on each aircraft. For kits, we have but the now-elderly Monogram kit that has also been released in a Revell box. It is not a simple build, but the result is a nice and large model. This sheet is perfect to replace the ones in the box, especially if you have an older boxing.
Here is an example of how one of the 111FIS options will look.
