Notes:

Here is another nice set from Authentic Decals and this time, it is for the F-18 Hornet. This one covers four aircraft from two USMC squadrons. The basic colors for these planes is the current two grey tactical paint scheme. Interestingly, no color information is provided with the set. Now this may seem odd, but really, all that info is provided with the kit anyway so it  won't be an issue.

The first squadron is VMFA-142, a reserve unit flying the F-18A version. There are two markings options with this unit. One is the the colorful unit commander's plane with most of the markings in scarlet and green. What is particularly appreciated is that Authentic Decals also provides a second option and this one is a standard line bird. Too often one sees a contest table full of the fancy schemes when most of a unit's planes are rather unremarkable. Anyway, it is much appreciated. These markings were seen on the planes when at Al Asad air base in Iraq during 2005. There is no indication as to whether these planes are the upgraded F-18A+ or not, so some additional research might be needed. Of course, if any of you know one way or another, I'd appreciate hearing from you. There are enough markings on the sheet to do both of these schemes.

The other is an F-18C unit, VMFA-312. These are from when the unit was deployed aboard the USS Harry Truman during 2009. Again, you get the two markings options. One is the very colorful unit commander's plane with most of the markings in scarlet. The other is a standard line bird, again, something that I appreciate. Now unlike the VMFA-142 options, one can only do one of these schemes with what is on the sheet. This is because there is only one set of upper fin markings. Some of the common markings for the line bird may need to be gleaned from the kit decal sheet. Again, it is difficult to tell from the drawings if these planes have been upgraded or not.

The decals themselves are very nicely printed and without a hint of registration errors. A full color set of markings placement instructions is included with this set. It is a great looking set of markings and I look forward to being able to review others.
