NOTES:

`

All right. Here is a sheet for one of my fave aircraft, the F-4 Phantom II. That now means that to use every F-4 sheet I have in my collection, I'll have to build about 200 kits. You know, decal collecting is just as debilitating as kit collecting. It just doesn't take up as much room!

Around the time of Desert Shield/Storm, the only active USAF units flying the F-4 were the 35th TFW at George AFB, the 52nd TFW in Germany, and the 3rd TFW at Clark AFB in the Philippines. It was the George unit that got all the Phantom glory during that time, but it wasn't the only batch of guys flying the types as the 3rd had dets in Turkey during that time.

This sheet has seven planes on it, all of them painted exactly alike and the only real difference is serials and some tail work. There are three F-4Es and four F-4Gs on the sheet. I have shown just two of them on the image above to save on space as the difference is in the details for these planes.

I'll start at the top of the sheet:

This first plane is shown in the markings it carried for the 'Gunsmoke 89' competition and has '3 TFW' in large fin markings.

Next is a very standard F-4E from this unit.

The final F-4E is the 13th AF boss bird with the MajGen's name on the cockpit railing.

The next is the first F-4G on the sheet. Its claim to fame is as the 90 TFS boss bird.

The second G is 69-7551. This plane is personally interesting. First of all it carries a kill marking on it that was for a kill claimed but not credited when it was an F-4E in Vietnam. Secondly, in 1986 or early 87, I saw this plane in a hanger at Clark AFB as an F-4E. It had a right main gear collapse on landing and the underwing tank caught fire. This fire burned through the right wing. Obviously it was repaired and modified as a G.

69-0291 was a G that had a confirmed kill as an E model in Vietnam during August of 1972.

Finally another rather normal G, 69-0244.

If you like F-4s, and build in 1/72, then this is a sheet that you should seriously consider adding to your collection. However, like all Aeromaster sheets, it is going fast.
