The last all-British designed, supersonic interceptor was the Lightning. Typical of many RAF aircraft, it was a maintenance nightmare, but an aircraft with awesome performance. It was also a type that was often rebuilt from older aircraft into later versions.
Several years ago, Airfix produced a 1/48 kit of the Lightning. Actually, two different boxings were done that provide all of the various marks. It was probably the best selling Airfix kit of all time. Yet it wasn't enough for the bean counters and was the last all new aircraft kit that Airfix produced. A real shame.
Anyway, Aeromaster has provided markings for all the different variants, and this sheet is for the square tailed ones. All are in bare metal with black around the canopy and on the anti-glare panel.
First is a 92 Sq F.2A from 1970 with its dark blue tail and upper spine.
Next is an F.3 from 56 Sq in 1965. It has a red/white checked tail and a red spine.
From 23 Sq is this F.3 with a white fin and upper spine.
Finally a super 111Sq F.3 with black fin and spine. The yellow bits are provided as decals
There are enough common insignia to do two planes. The stencils will have to come from the kit. If you've not built one of these beasts, then I can highly recommend them as real eye-catchers.
