Can do every Luftwaffe Norm 90J F-4F` |
This is the first sheet from a new German decal company call Air Docs and it is quite an initial effort. With this sheet, you can do every current Norm 90J camouflaged F-4F Phantom II as well as several special schemes. There is a four page instruction booklet that comes with the sheets (yes, I said sheets). Three of the pages are full color and show 11 different schemes, but there are enough numbers to allow you to do just about any F-4F in the fleet.
The fourth instruction sheet is black and white, but is dedicated to the second sheet in the decal set. That is a full sized sheet that has every single common data marking that you can find on a modern F-4F Phantom II. And that is a huge number of stencils and data markings. This includes the tail flag and walkways in addition to the stencils.
In amongst the schemes are two from the 20th FS, the GAF Phantom training unit at Holloman AFB in New Mexico. There are markings for two of those planes. There is also a 35th anniversary scheme for the 35th year of JBG 35 as well as other markings.
The decals themselves are absolutely superb and are done by Cartograf in Italy. They are crystal clear and spot on in registration. The colors are equally vibrant. If you have used Cartograf decals before, you know they are top quality.
Though there is no dedicated F-4F kit in 1/48, you can easily convert a Hasegawa F-4E or a Testors F-4E/G by simply removing the slats from the stabilators and replacing the seats. Though non-ICE F-4Fs did not carry missiles under the fuselage, the hollows were left as they were. The sheet instructions offers a listing of what is specifically needed as well as aftermarket parts that can be used.
If there is one downside to this sheet that would be that (so far) it is only available in 1/48. Perhaps a 1/72 sheet is in the offing.
