Warpaint #19 & 20 on theDeHavilland Hornet and Supermarine Seafire (Griffon engine)

MSRP $18.00

These are the latest releases in the Park/Hill 'Warpaint' series. They cover two post war British aircraft that I think almost any aircraft enthusiast likes: the Hornet and the Griffon engined Seafire.

Probably one of the finest looking piston engined fighters to be built in the late 1940's  and designed for long range escort , the Hornet would have served in the Far East where range was important. Built both for the RAF and RN, the Hornet did eventually see service with a number of units, though not in the numbers originally envisioned by the designers. It served with distinction in the jungles of Malaya in the mid 1950's before being removed from service due to deterioration of its wooden airframe. Sadly, none exist today.

The Griffon powered Seafire is among the last of the Spitfire breed to see large service usage. It served with both the RN and the RCN for a number of years providing pilots with an aircraft that was fun to fly, but tricky to land. For several months it was used in ground attack in Korea until displaced by the more suitable and capable Sea Fury.

Both of these books give a very good rundown of variants and units where they served. In addition, there is a listing of available kits, detail sets and decals in the back of the book. Also available are drawings of the various subtypes. These drawings are excellent, though oddly enough, the cannon bulges for the Seafire FR.47 are missing from the three views. Well, no one is perfect and this just goes to prove that it isn't a good idea to base your kit on drawings!

Despite this small glitch, the books are well worth the money, giving not only side color drawings, but a plethora of excellent photographs. Highly recommended for the modeler and the casual reader.
