NOTES: |
Like many of us who do not build a lot of armor, there has always been a fascination surrounding the various types that Germany placed in action during the last half of the Second World War. Amongst those are the various units based on the Tiger chassis.
Modeled in numbers far outreaching the quantity that were actually constructed, the three covered in this book are probably amongst the most interesting. I had always thought, based on the kit boxes on store display shelves, that these were widely used, however that impression was quashed upon reading this 1990 booklet. Actual production figures for the Elefant, Jagdtiger and Sturmtiger are 91, 74, and 8 respectively!
This book covers the development and deployment of each of the three types. There are also quite a few pictures of preserved machines, including a number of interior shots for each type. This is quite helpful when it comes to building models of these hulking machines. There are also numerous photos of these vehicles taken during the war, though many of them are of machines which have been knocked out of service.
For a primer on the types, I found the book to be quite helpful in explaining the differences between the subtypes (and there were some). The only thing I found lacking was color information. Outside of the front and back covers, there isn't any. A page of color profiles would be quite helpful to the modeler.
Overall a very helpful edition and recommended.
