For many of us, the F9F Cougar is typical of the change-over is US Navy fighter aircraft design. Though a straight wing aircraft had better low speed handling, it was simply not as fast as a swept wing jet. Grumman realized this and so performed the relatively simple task of taking their F9F Panther, and adding swept horizontal flight surfaces, thereby making the Cougar. Though many would consider it a new aircraft, thanks to the way funding went, it was easier to get funds for an improved version of what was already in service than for a new plane. The USAF did something similar in their F-84 series.

As most of you know, these books depend on extant museum aircraft or warbirds for the detail stuff. In the Cougar we are quite fortunate in having a considerable number of  airframes to choose from. The author has taken advantage of that by visiting probably every museum and outdoor display Cougar extant in the continental US. Several of these airframes are completely restored and provide accurate cockpits and other internal areas.

In tune with others in this series, we get superb looks at the cockpit area, landing gear and wheel wells, engines, and various external areas. This is additionally enhanced by an excellent selection of period images, some of which are in color. All of the variants from F9F-6 through to the QF-9G are covered to some extent or the other. This includes the two seat and the photo recon versions. A brief historical background starts the book and goes from there to hit all of the variants.

In all, it makes for a great book that is not only an interesting read, but a first rate reference as well for the detail enthusiast. Most highly recommended.
