This particular 'walk-around' is on the M-24 'Chaffee' light tank, one of the coolest looking tanks ever developed. Though I know a tiny bit more about tanks than I did 30 years ago, I still think the Chaffee is the neatest one every built. Probably my first armor model was an ESCI 1/72 version of this tank, so I'm pleased to see this book being produced.

The M24 was the follow on from the M5 Stuart and incorporated all the lessons learned during its operation. This means more armor a bit more speed and a much larger 75mm gun that was based on that used in the B-25H. This helped in making it more light weight and practical for a light tank. The M 24 saw use in the very last months of WWII in Europe and was also used in Korea, though it was not exactly a match for the North Korean T-34s. The tank was sold to many friendly nations and if you watch a lot of old movies, you'll see Chaffes being used as 'enemy' tanks. Check out the Guns of Navarone for instance.

The book is pretty much a full color look at extant tanks that are used by re-enactors and are held in museums. These tanks are in superb condition and the photography is first rate, allowing the enthusiast and modeler to see every part of the tank except for the underside.

It was a most fascinating read and is just the kind of book that makes this series so popular. There is little actual historical background other than on the mechanics and general development of the vehicles. However, that is the purvey of the 'In Action' series. There are two full pages of profiles just to add some additional interest.

For me, the book does its job very well. I found that I learned quite a bit from it and so am a bit less ignorant of things with treads than I was when I started! It is one that I can recommend to all.
