NOTES: |
This is a reprint of Aircraft Modeller International's Spitfire Special, produced in 1997. There is a note on the cover that it was reprinted due to popular demand. Having read the book, I can see why that is. The 60 pages of A-4 format softcover book are full of fascinating and helpful information regarding the Spitfire. Except for a handful of photos, all the images in the book are of models. All of the images are in black and white, though that in no way takes away from the book.
So here is what is inside the book:
Spitfire A-Z - this section lists all Spit kits, accessories and decals available in 1997. There is also a section on the differences of the various marks as well as one on which Spit uses which wheels.
The Supermarine Type 300 - a build article on doing the prototype in all of its different variants. There are some very good three views and instructions on how to make a wooden prop!
616 Squadron; the Spitfire Years - this is a history of 616 squadron and includes a number of Spit kits showing the various schemes carried during those years.
Star and Bar Spits - Like the article above, but this one shows Spitfires as used by various US units.
SEAC Spitfires - A rundown of Spitfires used in the Far East by the RAF.
In the center section is a large set of Spitfire drawings for the Mk XII and the prototype in 1/48.
Speculative Spitfires - a brief look at trials camouflage schemes developed during 1940 and 1941. Examples are in color.
Spitfire down under - RAAF use of the Spitfire.
Spitfire at Sea - A good look at the Seafire as well as a section on modeling the Seafire. This section contains a number of helpful drawings showing various modifications needed to existing kits.
First of the Griffons - Building the Spitfire XII in 1/48.
Stop-Gap Thoroughbred; the Spitfire IX - A history of and building of the Spit IX in 1/48. Of course, the conversion article has been made obsolete by the ICM kit and the upcoming Hasegawa Spit IX. Still a good article.
Every one of these articles was interesting and informative. If you have any interest in the Spitfire, I can heartily recommend this book to you.
