There are times when one comes across a book that one just knows is going to become the 'bible' on the subject. That is how reading Bill Norton's book on the Israel Air Force left me once I had finished reading it. And reading it is something that will not be done in a day. Even browsing through it will require the reader to spend considerable time. This is not your standard quick read book, but a comprehensive reference on one of the more interesting air arms in the world, the Israel Air Force.

It has taken me the better part of several months to completely read this book, and while I could have given a brief summary based on a quick browse, that really isn't what I do when it comes to book reviews. I actually read the entire publication. What I have found is a fascinating look into what to many is a rather secretive service of which one only really gets glimpses from time to time. There are many publications on the subject, but most have been officially approved so that means they've been screened and censored. The author has not had any official assistance in doing this book. His primary research has come from a number of sources and that information which has been contradictory, has been re-evaluated, and many myths and 'facts' have been corrected.

The result is the most complete and comprehensive book yet done on the subject. Inside the 432 pages is a full history of the service along with histories of all the aircraft ever used by the Israel Air Force. This includes those aircraft captured as well as missiles and rockets that have been developed. Among the over 500 photographs are 60 in full color, many of which have been published here for the first time. A comprehensive color section on unit badges, a map of base locations, and a full listing of known squadrons makes for a most complete appendix. Also given is a full listing of references used in producing this book.

What comes through is the story of what has to be the world's most experienced combat air arm. It is a book that is an absolute must for the enthusiast and one that I give my highest recommendation.
