This book is unique in my reading experience. In Mission 376, the author provides unprecedented detail regarding the events, experiences, personalities and aircraft that took part in the air war over Germany on one specific day. In addition to the US side of things, there are numerous first hand reports from surviving German pilots. This helps to weave a tale of bravery and desperation in what has to be the most detailed analysis of a single day of the air war ever done.

From planning to execution, all of it is here. The tales of the various bomb groups and their sorties to various German cities. The reaction of the Luftwaffe and what it was like to head into a mass of B-17s or B-24. You can almost hear the firing of guns in the multitude of air combats. Many of both sides fell on this day and the experiences of those who survived being shot down are also detailed. Though very much what was the norm during those days of the war, one special aspect of this day was the first US use of remote-control glide bombs.

There are literally hundreds of black and white photos of the men and the aircraft that were in the air during that day. This is augmented by 16 pages of color profiles. All in all an outstanding book and one that you won't soon forget once you have read it. It is most highly recommended for the student of the air war and for a most engaging read.
