At last the second of three volumes on the 2nd Tactical Air Force has been released and this one brings us up to New Year's Day of 1945 and includes all operations from July 1944 up to and including the 'Operation Bodenplatte' attacks on 2 TAF bases.

In common with the previous book (and most Classic Publications offerings), the book is formatted as a diary with the more interesting operations given some retelling and a listing of victories for each day by unit, where it took place and what the victim was.

There are then sections of the book that highlight specific aircraft, people and operations. One of the more fascinating sections is on the tank-busting operations of the Typhoons. These pilots were sent into combat at low level to look for enemy tanks and strong-holds. As a result, they were able to save the lives of many Allied soldiers, but the cost was rather high as these aircraft were quite susceptible to ground fire during their attacks and often came back badly shot up. Many did not return at all. This small section also considers whether it was actually worth it to use aircraft in this role or if it was more of a morale boost than an effective weapon.

Also scattered throughout the book are excellent maps, diagrams, and (something that I really like) a number of excellent profiles of the various aircraft of the 2 TAF.

It is not a book one rushes through in a few days or even a week. One needs to read this slowly to be able to digest the huge amount of information that has been provided by the authors. The end result is a deeper understanding of the heroism, drudgery, and other daily ops of these men who lived in tents and operated their aircraft in the crudest environment that any Allied aircraft was subjected to.

Another really outstanding book and fascinating reading which you really need to pick up and enjoy. Most highly recommended.
