The folks at RAF-in-Combat.com have continued with their series of downloadable books concentrating on USN aircraft types from 1922 until 1962. This time frame basically covers the old style of aircraft designations that was used by the Navy for forty years until the system was unified in 1962.

The last volume was mostly about the AD-1 Skyraider. This one continues with Douglas produced planes, starting with the A2D Skyshark, then moving on to the A3D Skywarrior and the A4D Skyhawk before finishing with Grumman stuff like the AF Guardian and the A2F Intruder. Each section goes into the specifics about the variant being discussed. This includes the number of aircraft built or modified, the time they entered into service and the date the last aircraft was stricken from the records. All of this includes a bevy of photographs of the aircraft in question, with as many in color as the time period allows. These are all photographs of operational aircraft so no worries about some war birds being snuck into the book as we often see from other publications.

So far, this book is only available as a .pdf and while some may prefer paper, having a downloadable publication has several positive aspects. One is that the cost is less and one does not have to deal with shipping. The other is that if you want to have hard copies of specific sections of the book it is easy enough to print out what you want or even the entire book should the need arise.

It is a superbly researched and developed book and I am positive you will find it as interesting a read as did I. Highly recommended.
