This is the first in a series called 'Allied Wings'. It appears from the second release (the Marauder I) that these books will be concentrating on those types that saw only limited squadron use during the war.
The Spitfire XII falls into this category as only about 100 aircraft were built and were used in combat by just two squadrons; 41 and 91. As the first Griffon powered Spitfire in service, it was used mostly to work out the bugs in the engine. The later Mk XIV was much more widely used, but the way was paved by the Mk. XII.
in this book, author Phil Listemann covers the development of the Griffon engine and its adaptation to the Spitfire airframe, first flying in late 1941. Trials against other types, including captured enemy planes showed it was superior in nearly all regards so was cleared for production and unit service. We then go into squadron service with its history with both 41 and 91 squadrons until it was withdrawn near the end of the war. A full operational record including unit sorties, claims listings, losses, and a time of operational use by serial number is included.
Overall, it is a superbly researched and presented book. It is also chock full of photographs of the Spit XII and the men who flew it. A book I found fascinating and one that is bound to be a valuable reference resource in the years to come. Most highly recommended.
