A concept that seemed like a good idea at the time was the turreted fighter. The theory was that these planes would be able to get into bomber formations, and with their four machine guns in the turret, should be able to decimate the attacking force. Of course, there were a few problems with this. One is that they needed to have all the fighters in the area cleared away to be most effective. Secondly, thanks to not installing any forward firing armament, they were sitting ducks if caught alone by enemy fighters. Somehow, this all didn't make it into the total equation and around 500 of these planes were constructed.

Finally getting into action during the latter part of the battle of Britain with 264 Squadron, the initial meeting with the enemy went somewhat as planned. However, when a later engagement brought into play escorting German fighters, the results were quite different and much of the attacking force of Defiants was shot down.

The Defiant was still used on daylight operations, being joined by 141 Squadron a bit later on, however the results were still not quite what had been expected and the type was shortly  removed from daylight fighter ops.

This book covers the complete history and operational use of the Defiant as a day fighter during 1940/41. It is a perfect reference for the type as it includes information on all known planes used in the day fighter role. There is an air to air claim listing, a loss listing and maps of bases.  Included are a large number of superb period photos of the men and machines as well as excellent color profiles based on some of these images. A role of honor for the men who flew these aircraft and specific information on each of them is included.

Overall a book that is superb and one that any enthusiast or modeler who has an interest in the type must have on their shelves. I know you will be as pleased as I with this edition.
