Allied Wings is now being published in a larger A4 format from the earlier editions. This time, the RAAF use of the B-25 Mitchell is the subject.
Many know that the Dutch operated the B-25 during the war using aircraft purchased prior to the start of the Pacific war as well as additional aircraft provided by the US. Few are aware that the Australians also used this aircraft in combat. Both were controlled by the same wing of the RAAF and their actual operational use was towards the end of the conflict when the Japanese were well on the defensive.
For this reason, there were not many JAAF fighters encountered on their various missions, though the anti-aircraft fire was still a force with which to be reckoned. Many standard bombing and anti-shipping missions were carried out during this time, resulting in the loss of a small number of RAAF B-25s. Once the war was over, it was decided not to keep the B-25 in service and they were quickly scrapped aside from a very few used for a few more years in test units.
This book covers the complete history and operational used of the B-25D/J Mitchell used by the RAAF's lone combat unit, 2 Squadron as well as those flown by the OCU and test units. It is a book that is a perfect reference as it includes information on all known planes by manufacturer's serial, RAAF serial, and even includes the fate of these aircraft with known codes used. Included are a large number of superb period photos of the men and machines as well as excellent color profiles based on some of these images. A role of honor for the men who flew these aircraft and specific information on each of them is included.
Overall a book that is superb and one that any enthusiast or modeler who has an interest in the type must have on their shelves. I know you will be as pleased as I with this edition.
