Modelling books are always an inspiration to me and other modelers. Seeing what can be done and having step by step instructions on just how to go about obtaining the results we see is a great motivator. Sure, we rarely are able to match what is shown in the pages, but it gets us going to do something we thought we'd never be able to achieve.
In Periscopio's first volume of Advanced Figure Modelling, we are taken on a journey through history by way of figure models. The majority of the figures in this book are Pegaso models, so it is no surprise that there is a tag on the cover showing their unblemished approval.
The majority of the 40 figures featured in the book are provided a couple of pages to show off the detail work put into these figures and a brief background to them. There are, however, five figures that provide us with step by step instructions to achieving the results shown. These are a Roman figure that specializes in painting faces, a later Roman Centurion, a Colonial US scene that concentrates on diorama base preparation, a French Cuirassier from 1814, and a Panzer Grenadier from 1945 that concentrates on painting camouflage.
All of the photos in the book are superbly done; crisp and clear. This is particularly important when one is trying to discern details or the differences in the various steps. Each figure highlighted provides complete color information as well, something appreciated when one wishes to duplicate what is seen.
Overall it is an outstanding book on the subject. One that will both motivate and inform. One that I am sure you will use as a reference over and over again. Highly recommended.
