The latest book in Osprey's 'Fortress' series is this one on Special Forces Camps that were built during the Vietnam War. The purpose of these camps was to provide bases from which local organization against the Viet Cong could be provided. These were generally in areas that were far outside the major population areas and as such, were each as individual as the people who built the camps. No two were alike and while each one of them had similar features, they were constantly being reconstructed and updated.

The author served in some of these camps during the war so is quite familiar with the way they were set up and how successful they were in their various designs. The book covers the construction, development and use of these camps. That includes the weapons, barriers, and obstacles that were part and parcel of special forces camps. There are specific examples of how they were built and details of how well they were able to withstand the test of battle against the NVA and VC.

As is the norm with Osprey titles, there are superb period photos, and excellent drawings and diagrams to help illustrate the subject. In all a fascinating look into an aspect of warfare that has been generally overlooked by historians of the period, and a book that can be highly recommended.
