Number 17 is Osprey's successful 'Modelling the' series is this one on the Panzer IV. Like the Sherman in US service, the Panzer IV was the mainstay of German armor forces, being found in all areas in which the Army was operating. Though perhaps lacking the glamour of some other tanks, it was operated in large numbers and converted into a near-bewildering number of other vehicle types.
Osprey seems to have a standard format for this series so the introduction has a very brief historical background, followed by a 'tools of the trade' section before getting to the body of the work. One thing I do appreciate is that the author has decided to stick to one scale, in this case it is 1/72. It is obvious from the reading that he prefers the Revell AG Panzer IV kit as it is the predominant source of all his builds; whether he uses the full kit or only grabs parts of it. As with most other books in the series, each build is given a level of difficulty. I'd have to say that this is probably subjective as what may be an intermediate to one modeler is advanced to another!
Without further ado, here is what is covered:
Panzer IV Ausf H - Intermediate
Jagdpanzer IV - Intermediate
Sturmpanzer IV (late) - intermediate/advanced
StuG IV - advanced
Flakpanzer IV - master
These builds are all followed by a gallery of other models built by the author. There is a good reference section, a page on museums and several pages on kits and accessories. This is followed by a page of color squares, something I've always thought of dubious value due to the four color printing process. While color chips would be more useful, it would easily add to the cost of the book without really providing any additional value.
Throughout the book you'll find color images of not only the build/modification process, but also of the completed project. Though these are small scale models, they sure don't look like it and are superbly built. Each build article goes into some depth on a modeling process, whether it be painting, weathering or application of zimmerit.
A superb volume that adds to the growing collection of fine modeling books from Osprey and one that I can recommend to all, regardless of their main subject interest.
