This is #31 in the Osprey Modelling Series and it is another fine one on doing figures. To many modelers, figures are not the subject with which they have the greatest skill in doing properly. While many of the subjects of this book are geared to more advanced modelers, the techniques in painting and modifying are things from which we can all learn.
The authors have taken a slightly different tack in this book from the others. Sure, there is the usual introduction, but it is an introduction to the basic subject. All information on tools and other materials is contained within each build subject. To me, this is the way to do things as it provides everything right where one wants it.
A primer on painting faces and uniforms is included with the first build, a large scale figure. In this there are step by step progressive photos that show how each application of paint builds on the previous one. A most helpful way of showing how results are obtained and one that most of us will appreciate as we try to duplicate the effects.
So, on to what is in the book along with the level of difficulty.
1. Operation Merkur, May 1941 - Intermediate
2. Normandy, 1944 - Advanced
3. Italy, 1943 - Master
4. Eastern Front, 1944 - Master
What I liked was that each figure introduced some additional skills to the palate. While the first one was used as an introduction to techniques, the second included building a background set from cork and cardboard. The third included modifying figures to get the pose that was desired, and the fourth included some major modifications of figures and the inclusion of some equipment and a large diorama base.
All this is followed by two pages for bibliography, reference and a brief list of figures. No color section in this one, though several interesting uniform patterns are covered in the build articles.
The layout of this book is a trend I hope continues. You basically get maximum space devoted to the subject builds with minimal introduction and other ancillary material. A most useful publication for figure folks and a superb inspiration. I know you will like it as much as I.
