Forty-one titles into the Osprey Modelling series and we now have a book on general aircraft model building. This edition takes many of the general techniques covered piecemeal in the previous editions on aircraft and combines them all into one location. Not to say this is just a reprint of various bits from earlier works as it is not.
The book starts out with an introduction into its purpose. Then it covers all of the tools and materials that one might find of use somewhere down the line. Most of us who have been doing this for a while have amassed quite a collection of useful items. Then the section on preparation for a specific subject that includes choosing the right model and doing some basic research as well as being sure one has all the needed materials.
The next section is on doing basic construction. This is really what makes or breaks a model. One can dump a ton of aftermarket into a kit, but if the basics are not sound, then all is really to waste. This leads into a section on using resin and photo-etch materials as well as some tips on producing your own parts if none are available. Of course, none of this additional materials is going to help if one doesn't know how to use fillers and sandpaper.
Once the model is well along, one should then prepare for painting, which is the next section. This covers paint types, paint brushes and airbrushing. For those who are interested in bringing something additional to their model, various weathering techniques are then covers. The book ends with a section on finishing, which includes clear parts, protective finishes, adding various wires and antennas and ways to display the model.
Overall an excellent book for those seeking more information on how to build a model aircraft. A book that is really a must have for the beginning modeler and one that those seeking to better their current skills will find of interest.
