#444 in their Men-at-Arms series, this one covers the history of Napoleon's hand-picked elite cavalry guard. These men served as Napoleon's personal escort for state visits as well as during battles.
Even those with a passing interest in the Napoleonic Period will realize that this was a time for some pretty flambouyant uniforms and other regalia used by these soldiers. Cavalry was the king during these periods, so much attention was lavished upon how these men looked; especially when you consider they were the Imperial Guard.
The author covers the origins of the guard, starting from the need to have on based on experiences in Egypt. Initially they were the Consular Guard in 1800 and 1801 until the formation of the Imperial Guard. The book covers the changes in uniforms and equipment throughout the Napoleonic period. This is amply assisted by period art work and the superb illustrations of Patrice Courcelle.
In addition to uniform items, the successes these men had in battle through their existence is also well documented. Not only were these men fiercely loyal to Napoleon, they were also some of the best trained and most effective soldiers in his army.
Overall another superlative Osprey book and one that is both an interesting and enjoyable read. I'm sure you will agree.
