This latest edition in the 'Duel' series is one that is obvious to nearly all aviation enthusiasts and one that pits probably the most equal antagonists against each other. The 109 and Spitfire were both developed about the same time in the late 1930s, had about the same engine power and had similar capabilities. The Spitfire had probably better maneuverability due to a larger wing area and could provide a rather higher amount of lead per unit area thanks to its 8 guns. The 109 was a tad faster, had a somewhat more powerful armament with its 20mm wing cannon, and did not suffer fuel starvation when going into a dive as did the carbureted Spitfire. Both lacked sufficient range for prolonged combat far from bases.

In terms of pilots, the Luftwaffe had an advantage as many of their pilots were experienced in combat from Spain and the earlier fights in Western Europe and Scandinavia. Both had quite good training regimens during this part of the war so even new pilots were somewhat comfortable in their aircraft. As the battle wore on, the British suffered from a lack of properly trained pilots in the frenzy of providing bodies for the aircraft available.

Tony Holmes covers all these salient features; design and development, technical specs, strategic situation, the combatants, and a selection of combats that took place between the two. There is also a section on statistics and analysis as well as the results of the time period in question. All of this is superbly illustrated with period photos as well as technical drawings and a few charts to help things along.

In all, an excellent addition to what is sure to become a popular series. I know you will enjoy it as much as did I.
