One of Germany's most successful military commanders of WWII was Erich von Manstein. Primarily a staff officer, he was a staunch advocate of mobile warfare, something of which he saw very little in WWI, but was able to put into use during the second world conflict. It was primarily his planning that led to the quick defeat of France in 1940 and allowed the Wehrmacht to stop the Soviet summer advances of 1943. Unfortunately, he and Hitler did not always see eye to eye and this led to his dismissal in the later war years when a capable field commander was most needed.

In this book as part of Osprey's new Command series, author Robert Forczyk takes look at the life of Eric von Manstein from his early years through his WWI experiences and the events of WWII that shaped his career. It also looks into how von Manstein fared post war until his death in 1973. Throughout the book are period photos and superb artwork that includes maps and charts of the campaigns in which he was involved.

In all, it is a fascinating look at one of Germany's more capable yet somewhat misunderstood commanders. A most interesting read and one that I am sure you will enjoy.
