During the early 13th Century, the north of what is now France went to war with the south in a bloody and brutal crusade aimed at destroying a heretical sect known as the Cathars. This conflict was characterized by guerrilla actions and besieging the numerous fortified sites that dotted the landscape of the south. Siege warfare was pretty much the norm at that time and even up into the modern era, was one of the best ways to overcome an enemy. It really only required the ability to wait out one's opponent. Often those under siege would have to surrender due to lack of water as most fortresses were on high ground away from streams.
This book covers the Albigensian Crusade, an event that lasted nearly a century and brought about the unification of a great part of what is now France and helped make her that preeminent power in the area for centuries.
The author has divided this book into several sections. An introduction, Design and Development of fortifications, a look at various sites (many of which still exist), an understanding of the Faidit Lords and crusader knights, the various sieges of specific sites, the results of this crusade and a look at the sites today.
This is all ably illustrated by Peter Dennis and further enhanced by photographs of the sites as they are today. I found his drawings and cut-aways to be especially informative and gives an idea of what it was like to be in these places during times of siege.
Overall, another fascinating book from the folks at Osprey. I always learn from these books and find them to be an excellent resource. It is a book you can buy with confidence.
