This is the next title in the New Vanguard series and brings the total to 100. It is the story of the world's first tank, the British Mark I-III. It covers the development of what was initially terms a 'Land Ship' before the more common name (and what was originally its secret cover name) of tank was put into widespread use.
After reading this book, I am completely amazed that these vehicles were considered war machines. They were unbelieveably cramped, incredibly noisy and full of noxious fumes. Add to it the fact that they were slow (top speed of 5 KPH) and difficult to maneuver; it makes you wonder about how the type was able to be properly used at all. Add to it that the fuel tanks were inside the machine and that a destructive blow to the vehicle meant the death of all inside, then the men who operated these early tanks were either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid!
Thanks to superb photographic coverage along with Osprey's usual outstanding cut-away and color paintings of the different variants of the tank and this makes for a truly fascinating introduction to the beginnings of the modern fighting machine used the world 'round. A highly recommended book.
