The war in Vietnam is to some, still with them while to others it is merely something read about in history books. Even to those who fought in the conflict, it is one that brings on a sense of confusion as to why we were there while to others it brings a sense of personal accomplishment. It was the first time that the United States had been heavily embroiled in what was essentially a civil war and like many past wars, the lessons of it were quickly forgotten, only to be repeated at a later date somewhere else.

To tell the story of the way the Army operated during this time author Gordon Rottman has been chosen. This is an excellent choice as he has spent some time in country during the conflict so has some additional insight into things that other may not have. He has followed the normal route of the 'Battle Orders' series that starts with an introduction to the war, the mission of the army in the conflict, the way these troops prepare for battle and the various unit organizations. Tactics utilized during the conflict as well as how those changed are also covered.

This leads on to a section on the weapons and equipment, the way units were controlled during battles and the tactics used. The book then goes on to cover each of the seven combat divisions and multiple brigades that were committed to Vietnam. While by no means an in-depth look at these units, an overview of their deployment and how they did in combat is important to following the changes that took place during the war. These units are listed in the order in which they deployed. This is followed by a short lessons learned section with a chronology of events and a bibliography.

Throughout the book are an excellent selection of photographs and various organizational charts. A very well done book that provides a lot of insight into the hows and whys of seven years of war in Indochina.  One of much interest and one that I can recommend to you without reservation.
