Adding to the growing books in the 'Battle Orders' series is this book on the British Army in their fight on the Western Front in 1916. By this time the war had settled down to trench warfare, and the British had learned a great deal since the start of the conflict about fighting such a war.

The Army of 1916 was quite different from that with which the British went to war in 1914. For one thing, a larger percentage of the men were new and many of these were conscripts as the fervor for volunteering had pretty well run its course.

The weapons of war had also changed from the early years. A greater reliance on large guns was part of the tactical planning. Fortunately for the British, they had some of the best weaponry of any of the major combatants. Their troops carried the best rifle, had the most reliable ammunition (though that was far from what modern armies would consider acceptable) and had the best artillery that could be manufactured.

In line with other books in this series, the author looks at the mission of the Expeditionary Force, their training, unit organization (and this takes up a considerable section of the book), their methods of command and communications as well as intelligence gathering. The weapons and equipment are discussed as well as tactics as shown in several battle scenarios. The book then ends with what was learned during this period of time.

This is all further enhanced by quality period photographs and superbly drawn maps and charts.

Overall, an excellent addition to the series and one that with both enlighten and inform the reader.
