Started as a multi-national VTOL/STOL fighter project, the Kestrel, the Harrier has blossomed to become a full fledged ground attack aircraft with a good air to air capability as well. This sort of aircraft was perfect for the US Marines as they could deploy on the shorter 'Gator Freighters' that the Marines use for the expeditionary forces, along with their helicopters. In fact, I dare say that there have been more Harriers serving with the USMC that there are with all other nations combined. The airframe has been continually updated with a major upgrade resulting in the AV-8B Harrier II, a type that is still in service, awaiting the successful completion of F-35 tests and its eventual introduction into fleet service.

When Iraq invaded Kuwait, the Marines had just about completed total conversion to the Harrier from the Phantom II and Skyhawk. It was just natural that the Harrier be sent to the desert to participate in the air campaign against Iraq and to do what they do best; support ground forces. These aircraft were operated from fixed bases in the area as well as on Marine assault ships. Most of the USMC Harrier units took part in some portion of the operation and learned valuable information from the experience. One was that the Harrier was truly a capable ground attack aircraft that could do the job.

This book covers the history of the aircraft, the deployment of those units that participated, the missions they flew and what they learned. I found it interesting that most units were flown over there non-stop with many air to air refuelings and after the campaign were, in some cases, relegated to 'deck cargo' on returning Navy carriers.

Typical of the series, there are plenty of combat reports from the pilots who took part in the campaign. This is enhanced by an excellent choice of photos, most in full color, and the usual center section full of full color profiles. It is a fascinating look into Harrier operations during Desert Shield/Storm and a book that I know you will enjoy reading.
