Here is a neat book that provides not only a ton of good color photos, but is also a very nice guide to the ships and equipment of the modern navy.

Just to give you an idea of how the book is divided, there is an Introduction, Post WWII, A Nuclear Age Navy, Foreign Navies, Amphibious Warfare, Cruisers and Destroyers, Submarines, Littoral Combat, and the Future of Naval Warfare.

The authors have, as you might imagine, concentrated mostly on US ships and aircraft carriers seem to be getting the most exposure as the section on Foreign Navies covers only 'bird farms'. However, that is not to imply that other types are not covered as there are a lot of other ships included in the book such as amphibious warfare types, cruisers, destroyers, gunboats, and many more types.

There are literally hundreds of full color photographs of the ships and equipment, making this as much a photo book as any sort of detailed look into the design and construction of these vessels. I would guess that most would call it a primer on the subject and in that respect, it has done quite well.

It is the sort of book that would be perfect for a gift for a youngster as an introduction to the subject, for the prose is not complex and the photography is excellent. It is a book that both young and old are sure to enjoy reading many times over.
