The latest general modeling magazine to hit the stands is Jeff Herne's Model X. You may recognize Jeff's name from other magazines so he is no beginner in this market. Having read the editor's introduction to the magazine, I see that he and I share a lot of the same general philosophies when it comes to publishing. The product needs to be entertaining and one that reads well; like a conversation rather than a lecture.
Though I'm not a Gen X'er (the target population of this magazine), I can appreciate what Jeff is trying to accomplish. This pilot issue shows that he is on the way to meeting his goals. Each article is full of superb photos, the vast majority in full color. In each one the reader (that's us) is able to come away from the article having learned a new trick or technique that we can try.
There are articles of varying skill levels and though you may not appreciate the techniques used, they are all done well. There are articles on a 1/72 Tamiya F4U Corsair, Tamiya 1/48 Hetzer, Revell 1/72 Gato submarine, and a show report from Euro-Militaire 2006. There are also articles on how to assemble Fruil tracks and a photo essay on a museum's Spitfire 22, and on Sherman turrets.
All and all an excellent first issue and one I know you will find useful and entertaining. I do hope Jeff keeps me on his mailing list for the rest!
