The next in the continuing saga of the Luftwaffe's Jagdwaffe is this one on units in Russia during 1943. 1943 was not a great year for the Germans as they were steadily being pushed back out of Russia by an increasingly strong Soviet Army. In the air, things were not much better as the Russians were fielding better and better aircraft, while the numbers for the Jagdwaffe were dwindling through combat and other attrition.

The FW-190 was becoming a greater factor in the fighting, and several times, it was the presence of the Luftwaffe that helped to turn the tide in battle. Conversely, the lack of air cover assisted the Soviets in several of their big gains. This period of time also saw the emergence of the 'super ace', those with scores that exceeded 200 victories.

Though most of the volume concentrates on the Central and Southern Fronts, there is a small section on those who fought out of bases in Finland. Here there was either not enough light or too much, as summer time brought 24 hour light and round the clock sorties.

As with other volumes in this series, there are the usual pilot stories, superb color profiles based on period photographs and an excellent feel for what conditions were like for these men who fought on until the very last.

It is a book I can most highly recommend. For Luftwaffe enthusiasts it is a 'must have'.
