Continuing with the saga of the Luftwaffe's fighter arm is this volume on the Mediterranean Theater from 1942-1943 when the Germans were finally forced out of North Africa.

Always considered a side show by the Axis, it is a story of units constantly lacking in spares, fuel and replacements. It is also one of a quickly moving front line that had squadrons moving from place to place, living out of tents and having to perform maintenance in the harshest of conditions.

As is always the case in war, little was done to really reinforce these units until it was obvious that there was a problem and the Allies had gotten the upper hand; in this case it was the November 1942 landings on the northwestern African coast by the Allies. This found the Germans fighting on two fronts, caught in between the British to the East and the Americans to the West. An influx of units to the beleaguered forces wasn't enough to stem the tide as the Axis had not taken advantage of earlier opportunities to make it safe for their supply convoys to bring in much needed materiel. This period saw the brief use of the FW-190 and the introduction of the G model 109 to Jagdwaffe units.

As with other volumes in this series, there are the usual pilot stories, superb color profiles based on photographs and an excellent feel for what conditions were like for these men who fought on until the very last.

Like the others in the series, it is a book I can most highly recommend. For Luftwaffe enthusiasts it is a 'must have'.
