Continuing the saga of the Jagdwaffe, this edition looks at the surprisingly few fighter units that were defending France and the Channel Coast against the beginnings of the Allied bombing effort. With the war in Russia and North Africa draining resources from Northern Europe, the Jagdwaffe was left with only two Geschwader to defend the entire Channel coast and northern Europe from increasing attacks from the RAF and later the early daylight bombing from a slowly growing USAAF presence.

In addition to telling the story of the increasingly frequent Allied bombing campaign, this edition also tells of the introduction of the FW-190 into operational units and so that aircraft plays an equally prominent part of the story to the Bf-109.

It was found that the 190 was particularly suited to the jabo or fighter-bomber role, thanks to its fast speed and radial engine. The engine in particular was a benefit as it was air cooled and able to take damage that would quickly bring down the liquid-cooled 109.

Thanks to the lack of a proper bomber, these jabo units were called into play to perform hit and run bombing operations in southern England. The effects of these attacks brought forward a failed effort to combat them that was way out of proportion to the amount of damage they inflicted. Unfortunately, the Luftwaffe was unaware of their effects on the RAF.

Even night jabo attacks were performed, a plan that was hastily conceived, not given enough time to build up a cadre of trained pilots and doomed to failure.

As with all the books in this series, there are outstanding photos, profiles and stories to add spice and interest to the subject. If you are a Luftwaffe fan, then this is a book that really needs to be on your shelves.
