Next in the excellent Jagdwaffe series is this volume covering Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union in June of 1941. This covers the first six months of combat when German forces quickly overran Soviet forces and pressed on to the outskirts of Moscow. As we all know, the Russian winter defeated the Germans just as it had done Napoleon.

Following previous volumes, this one is full of new photos, pilot stories and excellent profiles. I'm sure that there will be a few decal sheets produced on this edition just as there have been on ones before and on the ones coming up.

As the Luftwaffe had begun transitioning from the Bf-109E to the Bf-109F, the vast majority of aircraft pictured in the book are of the F version. The Es were mainly used as ground attack aircraft. Some very interesting schemes and markings are shown within its pages as often Eastern Front units were allowed to experiment beyond the usual approved schemes. Though not as elaborate as those that followed, you can see the start of what is to come.

Like all the other volumes, it is card bound, A4 format, and about 96 pages. For my money, this is one of the finest series of books on the subject. What makes it even more appealing to me is that it mostly covers my favorite aircraft, the Bf-109. Unusually, there are no stories from the opposition in this one. Perhaps most of them were 'purged' by Stalin after the war.

Overall, an excellent book and one that should be on the shelves of those who are interested in the Luftwaffe and the Bf-109. Highly recommended.
