Notes: September - October 1940

Continuing in the series on the German fighter arm, the Jagdwaffe, this edition takes the reader into the more active parts of the battle, when the campaign switched from day to night bomber attacks. During this period, the advent of the fighter-bomber came to the jagdwaffe with each unit being required to have a dedicated ground attack section. It was found that the speedy 109s were not only pretty good at the job, but when the bomb was dropped, they were able to defend themselves against British fighters. Not exactly looked upon by favor by many pilots, who felt they were too good for moving mud, but they were relatively good at it and caused the British much concern.

As with other editions, this one follows a time line through the months of September and October 1940, the height of the Battle of Britain. It is interspersed with first hand accounts as well as the tactical situation of the time. Some of the more interesting missions are highlighted and there is an order of battle chart given.

Like the other editions, it is chock full of profiles, all based on several black and white photographs of the aircraft in question. Most are of planes shot down by the British, which accounts for the variety of photos of each plane. At the end of the book are some cameos of the opposition.

The book gives an interesting overview of the situation of the time and a lot of very nice photographs of the aircraft. Modelers will like it for the profiles, a few of which are somewhat different than what is shown on several of the more popular decal sheets. Like Luftwaffe? You'll like this book. 109 fan? You'll like this book. Interested in the Battle of Britain? You'll like this book.
