Probably the ultimate in the Pulawski winged fighters, the P.24 was a relatively successful exported variant of Poland's P.11c. Though of a greater power and speed than the P.11c, the P.24 was never used by the Polish Air Force, a rather odd omission, if you ask me. When used against aircraft of a similar generation and type, such as many of those flown by the Italians, it was able to perform quite admirably. However, once forced to fight against the superior technology of the Luftwaffe, it was shown to be woefully inadequate.
Andrzej Glass' book on the P.24 is undoubltedly the best reference currently available on the type. It supercedes an older 'in action' style book that was published some 15-20 years ago and was only sporadically available outside Poland. In his book, a full history of the development of the P.24 as well as some introduction to the earlier Pulawski winged aircraft is provided. I found it somewhat amusing that the author comments that just about every gull-winged aircraft built after the P.1 was built had basically taken its wing design from Pulawski.
In addition to a full history on the type, there is a full rundown on the construction and systems on the P.24. This is followed by excellent three views of all the different variants, a flow chart showing the development of the sub-types and drawings which highlight the differences between subtypes. This is followed by several pages of excellent color profiles.
As with all Kagero books, a freebie is included, this time a decal sheet in 1/48 and 1/72 for the unique markings of several of the planes in the book. Also included are a set of masks for the wheel pants markings of a Bulgarian aircraft. I should also mention that the book is the standard Polish/English compilation that Kagero uses and this one was a very easy read without any troubling syntax errors.
For those who are building the new Mirage P.24 series, this book is a must have. To date, this is THE reference to have on the type.
