A subject that doesn't get covered too often is WWI. It was just as bloody if not more so than WWII and the type of fighting done was some of the most grueling ever endured by a soldier. Just think of being in a trench that has water a foot or more deep for weeks. No where to properly rest, rats and lice a constant companion and even worse, most of the time was spent waiting or in very small group combat with major attacks often months if not years apart.

When it came to this type of warfare, though the Allies had the manpower and often the better equipment, the Germans had the better engineering. Both sides suffered horribly once the war came to a stalemate, but the Germans knew how to prepare defenses and were often able to do defense in depth with the forward trenches weakly defended. When those were overrun, the bulk of the troops then attacked and drew the earlier attackers back from whence they came, often with large losses.

This new book from Concord covers the lot of the German soldier at the front. The author has gone through the archives to bring a collection of photographs of the German Army in the field. There are images of the uniforms and equipment he used as well as the conditions under which he was forced to fight. The images are, for the most part, very nicely done and well chosen for clarity.

As with all books in this series, there is a short historical introduction, followed by the photos, arranged by calendar sequence. The center of the book contains several  pages of very nicely done color illustrations of men and equipment that will be particularly well received by figure painters.

Overall, it is another superb addition to a growing line of excellent photo books by Concord. If you have any interest in the subject, then this is a book for you.
