Such was the paranoia of leadership in Germany during the Nazi regime, that the personal guard of the higher party officials turned into another army, one that was basically composed of fanatics. In order to be accepted into the SS (SchutzStaffel or Protection Service) one had to be a loyal Nazi and a home born and raised German. Of course, as the war got underway and the need for manpower increased, the requirements were eroded quite a bit, but still, these were people who were often brutal and generally did not follow the accepted standards of combat. They were also the ones who normally got the newest and the best equipment, though again, this was not always the case.

In this book, the authors have gone through the archives to bring a collection of photographs of these men in field conditions. The images are mostly crisp and clear and photographed in a number of locations, though mostly in the Eastern Front. As with all books in this series, there is a short historical introduction, followed by the photos, arranged by calendar sequence. The center of the book contains several  pages of very nicely done color illustrations of men and equipment during different phases of the war.

Overall, it is another superb addition to a growing line of excellent photo books by Concord. If you have any interest in the subject, then this is a book for you.
