The last year or so of the war was not particularly a good one for Germany (thank you, Mr. Obvious). On retreat in the East, where the majority of the German war effort was concentrated, even new and upgraded weapons were not enough to stem the advance of Soviet troops. This was further exacerbated by a lack of trained replacement troops and insufficient materiel..

Despite all that, the Germans fought on against a foe that gave no quarter.

In this book, the authors have gone through the archives to bring a collection of photographs of the German Army in the field, fighting against the Soviets in these final years. The images are mostly crisp and clear and photographed in a number of locations. I found that the emphasis was on the infantry for this one. This includes those in artillery and even  Luftwaffe ground forces and the Volkssturm are covered.

As with all books in this series, there is a short historical introduction, followed by the photos, arranged by calendar sequence. The center of the book contains several  pages of very nicely done color illustrations of men and equipment that will be particularly well received by figure painters.

Overall, it is another superb addition to a growing line of excellent photo books by Concord. If you have any interest in the subject, then this is a book for you.
