I won this book in a raffle last year. My first thought, was 'Great, another picture book on bombers. Just what I need'. Boy, was I wrong. Inside its card covers are 180 pages of full color and just plain interesting stories of the USAAF's bomber offensive in Europe during WWII.

The book is full of stories by the men who flew, maintained and supported the B-17s and B-24s that flew the raids over enemy territory. Not only do you see the photos of the planes, but you get a good idea of what it was like to be in the aircraft. There are stories of fear, success, regret, loss, and the every day life of an airman. What he did between missions, his few days of relaxation off post, the people he met and those that spent his tour with.

On top of that, the author has had the opportunity to choose from a number of excellent period color photographs, most of which I've never seen before. Those photos are enough to make this book a very worthwhile addition to any library. For those who are interested, there is a companion book on fighters that was released several years before this 1994 edition and well worth seeking out.
