In a similar format to their earlier book on the X-15, this photo scrapbook is basically just what it says. These are images that didn't fit into the larger B-36 history, but were interesting and important enough to merit their own book.
Now I've not read the big B-36 book, but judging from the images in the photo book, it has to be an excellent history. This book has sections on the making of the movie 'SAC' with J-J-Jimmy S-S-Stewart that include a number of excellent interior shots as portions of the aircraft had to be reproduced at the studio.
Next is a section that has some superb shots of the aircraft while in squadron service. That is followed by a number of photos of the tornado that hit Carswell AFB and basically put the B-36 out of the bomber business. Fortunately, with the factory across the field and 84 hour work weeks, the fleet was returned to service with only one aircraft written off of the over 50 aircraft damaged.
This is followed by an excellent color section that makes this reader wish that the images were larger so more detail could be seen in them! After that is a section on a B-36 that lost its entire forward fuselage at what is now Travis AFB and the efforts taken to return that plane to service.
The section on odds and mods covers the XC-99, YB-60 and NB-36H 'Nuclear powered' aircraft along with other test planes as well as modifications to carry the Rascal cruise missile and the RF-84K 'Ficon' project. It ends with some information on the last B-36 built and those that are currently preserved.
Overall an excellent read and very much a book for the modelers. Were I you, I'd pick up a copy at your local hobby shop (assuming they carry books) or order direct from Specialty Press at the link below.
