Considered by myself and thousands of others as the coolest thing that ever flew, the F-4 Phantom II is now all but gone from the skies of the US and UK, though the Spaniards, Germans, Turks, Greeks, South Koreans and Japanese are still flying them.
It would not be untrue to say that the Phantom has probably been in more USAF/USN/USMC squadrons than any aircraft since WWII, and it served out a great deal of its life with the USAF ANG and Reserves. It was while it was serving in this capacity that I first became enamored with it and so most of my personal experience has been with ANG F-4s.
Don Logan has been involved with the Phantom for a LOT longer than I, and it was only natural that he'd devote a book to it. Don't get me wrong, this is not a book full of dry facts and figures and stories, no, it is full of photographs. Three to a page and beautifully printed. Each squadron is listed with as many photos as needed to cover the life of the aircraft with that unit, including all of its different camouflage schemes and special paint jobs. When it gets to the ANG section, it is listed by state to make things easier for the casual browser.
In addition to all the lovely photographs, taken by some of the world's best aviation photographers, there is a listing of every known serial number (that the author is aware of) which served with each unit. A brief history of each squadron is also given so you know where the Phantom fit into the overall scheme of things. Many Phantom squadrons transitioned to F-15s and F-16s while others moved to the heavies; the C-130s, KC-135s and C-141s.
There is a small sampling of what you can expect in the book shown by the image to the left. If you have any interest at all in the aircraft, or just want a super photo book on a super aircraft, then click on the hyperlink below and order this book. It is one that I can unabashedly give my highest recommendation.
Thanks to Don Logan Books for the review sample
