HISTORY

Back in the days of experimentation making a flying saucer was easy to say, and later proved to be difficult to actually achieve.  This was the case back in 1959 when the US Army contracted Avro Canada to build a flying saucer type vehicle. This in was in fact, a VTOL design with the capability to fly at speeds of 300 MPH at an altitude of 10,00 feet. Unfortunately it only accomplished a mere 35 knots at an altitude of less than 4 feet, 10 million dollars well spent wouldn’t you say?

It did however usher in the age of hovercrafts, using a crude canvas skirt round its perimeter; the Avrocar was able to cross rough terrain on a cushion of air.

THE KIT

And a cute kit it is, and as you can see by the parts photos, the whole thing measures no more than 3 inches across, and consists of an upper and lower part. The smaller wafer holds an Avro logo, and some seats and wheels. The builder must supply some gear supports for the wheels, but that’s easy to find.

The two bubble canopies are vacuformed and seem to fit into the cavities in the upper saucer section, and are very clear. The quality of the castings are excellent, crisp and very well detailed for this scale. For the most part, a slight sanding of the two saucer parts and some judicious painting one will have a very nifty representation of a unique historical aircraft with a minimum of fuss. This kit can be purchased through a number of vendors or direct from Sharkit. Get your own flying Saucer today!
