Sheet probably out of production

Detail & Scale released a number of decal sheets back in the 80’s, in conjunction with their excellent books. Suprisingly, only a handful of their sheets did well. One that did not do well, and is still available 15 years after it was released, is #0548. It provides marking for three F-106A’s.

One is a/c 58-0773 from the 14th FIS, the famous "Hat in the Ring" squadron. The markings for this unit represent the aircraft while it was deployed to Korea during the Pueblo Crisis of 1970. Next up is an Air Defense Weapons Center a/c circa 1978, 59-0103. These markings represent the later style used by this unit. The last a/c covered is, in my opinion, the best looking of the three. Markings are for a/c 58-0780 of the Cave Tigers of the 460th FIS at William Tell 1972, just before deactivation of the unit.

The decals are printed by LSJ Graphics. If they are like other D&S sheets I’ve used that have been printed by LSJ, the decals will be loaded with excess adhesive that appears as white clumps once soaked in water. Weather this is because of the paper that was used, or because the decals are so old, I do not know, but they go down well with a little Solva-set.

My sheet was in near perfect register, and has great color. One nice touch that D&S did was to mark where to cut the command stripe for the ADWC a/c if you chose to model your Six with the weapons bay open. No data, titles, or insignia, other than a/c data blocks, are provided on the sheet, and must be obtained elsewhere. Superscale sheet 48-291 F-102 data is a good choice here, as F-102 and F-106 data is nearly identical.

The instruction sheet is great, and includes pictures of the a/c represented. Overall, this is an excellent sheet, and is on par with D&S’s great line of books.
