Aeromaster continues its line of sheets for U.S. Air Force F-4’s over Viet Nam with this offering, the third sheet in the series.
The instruction sheet is in color & has a left profile drawing of both a/c, & a generic overhead view. Both a/c are in the South East Asia camouflage scheme. A bare minimum of decals are devoted to common markings & data stenciling, but the quality of the decals is excellent. Due to the background color of the sheet, my scanner was not able to pick up any of the white decals, but they are all there. Hasegawa, Monogram & ESCI are the recommended kits.
The first a/c covered is from the 405th FW, based out of Clark AFB in 1970. This a/c has the three yellow “command stripes” of the wing commanders a/c. The tips of the external tanks, inboard pylon & the top of the vertical tail are also yellow, which need to be painted by the modeler. The black square just under the windshield contains the crew chief’s name & is repeated on the other side. The chin air intake needs to be painted black, with the yellow trim supplied as decals, along with the yellow lettering “NUMBA-WUN”. Since this is the wing commanders a/c, it carries markings for all the wings Mig kills (3) on the intake & on the tip cap of the vertical tail. These red stars are repeated on the right side of the a/c.
The second a/c is an F-4C, “SUGAR FOOT III”, from the 559th FS, 12th TFW in Cam Rahn Bay, 1969. This unit was one of the two initial fighter wings to receive the F-4, having received their F-4Cs in the gull gray over white scheme, before changing over to the S.E.A. camo pattern represented here. This a/c also received special markings because it was the wing commanders a/c. The sheet contains decals for the stripes on inboard pylon, vertical tail tip cap, intakes, & external drop tanks. The blue area on the drop tanks must be matched to the decals & painted on by the modeler. Aeromaster has provided the wing badge as a single or two-piece decal. “SUGAR FOOT III” is also repeated on the right side of the a/c.
The 405th went on to fly the D & E models, but were disestablished in 1982. The 559th transitioned to the D, but the 12th FW gave up all its fighters to become the 12th Flying Training Wing in 1972.
I recommend this sheet to all the Phantom Phrekes out there.
