1/144 F/A-18E VFA-27 "Royal Maces" & F/A-18F VFA-41 "Black Aces" (Twin Pack)

Barcode: 0 89195 84618 1
Case Pack: 48 Pieces Per Master Carton
Box Size: 6.4" x 10.2" x 1.9"

The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is a more advanced version of the F/A-18C/D Hornet, and it is also 20% larger than its predecessor. The Super Hornet is most famously used by the U.S. Navy aboard its fleet of a dozen aircraft carriers, with around 370 fighters presently in service. The difference between the E and the F models is that the former is a single-seat design and the latter has a two-seat configuration. Initial Operating Capability (IOC) of the Super Hornet was achieved in September 2001. Since then it has participated in a number of conflicts, including Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

Two U.S. Navy squadrons that operate the Super Hornet are VFA-27 and VFA-41. VFA-27 “Royal Maces” of Carrier Air Wing 5 is based at Atsugi in Japan and is presently embarked on the USS George Washington (CVN-73) in East Asia. The unit has been flying the F/A-18E since October 2004. The second squadron, VFA-41 “Black Aces,” is stationed at Lemoore in California. This formation flies F/A-18Fs aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN-68).

Dragon has launched a 1/144 scale kit that features one fighter from each of these units – an F/A-18E from VFA-27 and an F/A-18F from VFA-41. The two model aircraft are finely sculpted, with the lower fuselage made from slide-molded components for greater accuracy. The landing gear can be displayed lowered or raised, and the wingtips can be folded up or shown in flying configuration. Dragon has supplied a range of armaments such as AIM-9L and AIM-9X Sidewinders, as well as the AGM-88 HARM. There is also a fuel tank available for fitment. Cartograf has produced some high-quality decals to depict the colorful markings of these two naval squadrons. This boxed set containing two complete 1/144 scale aircraft offers a real shot in the arm for aircraft modelers.

The Panzer IV was the only German tank to remain in continuous production throughout the course of WWII. The final version in the Pz.Kpfw. IV family was the Ausf.J This particular variant commenced production in June 1944, and a total of approximately 3125 were eventually manufactured. The Ausf.J succeeded the Ausf.H, and rather than being an enhanced version of the Ausf.H, the final design was actually simplified in an attempt to ease and speed up construction. Thus, the electric turret drive was deleted and an extra fuel tank was fitted in its place. Other distinguishing features include the absence of Zimmerit.

Dragon has produced a Mid-Production variant of the Panzer IV Ausf.J in 1/35 scale. This plastic Smart Kit offers some special features of this period of Pz.Kpfw.IV production, including the use of solid steel Schurzen plates prior to Thoma-type wire-mesh side-skirts being introduced. For maximum modeler enjoyment, Dragon supplies these Schurzen plates as separate pieces made from metal, thus allowing complete realism.

The kit offers two different turret-top ventilation covers for greater versatility. Two newly tooled flame-suppressing exhaust mufflers are also supplied for the rear of the tank. The running gear continues to feature four return rollers, for these were only reduced to three at a later stage. Details on this kit are finely detailed, the product of widespread use of slide molds. To complete the model, 40cm Magic Tracks are supplied. Various photo-etched metal components are included, things such as engine ventilation grills, and mesh for the turret baskets. This kit offers modelers the convenience of producing a typical Mid-Production Ausf.J tank without having to resort to kit-bashing or extensive conversion.

1/35 "Fragile Alliance" Axis Forces, Balkan 1943 (4 Figures Set)

Barcode: 0 89195 86563 2
Case Pack: 48 Pieces Per Master Carton
Box Size: 6.4" x 10.2" x 1.9"

After Italy ventured into Albania in 1939, Mussolini decided to invade Greece on 28 October 1940. The Italian armed forces found it hard going, and in fact, it required the intervention of German forces attacking via Yugoslavia to finally capture the region. Yugoslavia and Greece were divided into sectors, with Italian, German, Bulgarian and Rumanian forces policing these occupied territories against determined partisan resistance.

Italy occupied two-thirds of Greece (including its islands), Albania and the Yugoslav coast. Although they were supposed to be allies, there was often tension in the relationship between Germany and Italy. After Benito Mussolini was ousted in July 1943, the country signed a secret armistice on 3 September, bringing Italy’s combat involvement in WWII to an end. German forces in Italy and the Balkans moved quickly to disarm their former allies and to take up critical defensive positions, with significant violence taking place in some garrisons.

Dragon’s newest 1/35 scale figure set depicts four soldiers set against this historical backdrop of 1943. There are three German soldiers and a lone Italian, and their relationship appears rather strained, hence the set’s title of “Fragile Alliance”. The Italian is gesticulating as he argues a point with an unconvinced German. The soldiers are finely molded with crisp details and realistic features. They are wearing uniforms and carry weapons appropriate for this period of the war just before German-Italian relationships turned completely sour. There are two brand new accessories in this set too – the oil can that one soldier is using as a footrest, and a food container in the hand of another soldier. While the set doesn’t promote bilateral relationships, it does provide modelers with some useful figures from Germany and Italy! Furthermore, model-makers can use this set to create a scene of their own imagination.
